Richard Dickey

Service Details

Richard Dickey was born in Marion, Iowa, on January 2, 1928 and passed away December 10, 2013. He moved to Des Moines in time to start kindergarten at Park Avenue grade school. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1946. While at Lincoln, he was active in sports – football and track – and was elected senior class vice-president. In recent years, he sent out a quarterly newsletter to his fellow classmates. He also started dating Darlene Wallace while attending Lincoln, who eventually became his wife of 64 years.

After high school, he served in the Coast Guard. When he came back from the service he married Darlene and started at Drake University from which he graduated in 1954. He went on to work for Meredith Corporation headquarters in Des Moines where he had a career that lasted 39 years.

Dick enjoyed golf from an early age. He passed that love onto his son and grandkids. His yard was another passion. It was always impeccably maintained with a variety of colorful flowers and shrubs. Family always came first. Attending games, concerts, and grandkids’ activities was always a great joy to him and Darlene.

He is survived by his wife Darlene; son, Kirk Dickey; and his grandchildren, Ryan Dickey and Kate (Dave) Cossa.

A memorial service will be held after the first of the year; a date and time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials in his honor to First Baptist Church in Johnston or to the American Cancer Society.

Condolences for the family may be offered online at: www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.
