Richard O. Thorpe, 87, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2013 at UnityPoint Health Des Moines Methodist West.
Richard was born April 6, 1926 in Huntsville, Missouri to Perry and Sally (Smith) Thorpe.
Richard was an avid bowler. He enjoyed fishing and watching car races. Richard was a talented cook and enjoyed traveling. He loved spending time with his family and was a 13+ year member of St. Paul’s AME Church where he was a devoted member, singing in the choir and serving as usher. Richard will be remembered as an outgoing gentleman who was quick to turn a stranger into a friend.
Richard is survived by his wife, Birdie Thorpe and children: son, Larry Davis (Janice) of Des Moines; son, Richard Thorpe (Diane) of California; son, Perry Thorpe (Robbie) of Missouri; son, Jerry Thorpe (Barbara) of Missouri; daughter, Theresa Dean (Ronnie) of Missouri; son, Kenneth Thorpe of Arizona; daughter, La’Tanya Thorpe of California; son, Rory Thorpe of California; daughter, Alicia Thorpe of California; daughter, Charlene Robinson of Missouri; daughter, Avonna Arthur of Missouri; son, Michael Robinson of Kentucky; and daughter, Raelyn Gregory (Scott) of Nevada. He is also survived by his nephew, Mark Madison (Brenda), 32 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Robert.
Services will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at St. Paul’s AME Church, 1201 Day Street, Des Moines. Family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 12:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Glendale Cemetery.

Dear Family,
How sad I was to learn of Cousin Richard's passing. Many are the fond memories of spending a few summer days with him and Birdie at the Thorpe Family Reunion and in Kewanee. We always looked forward to a card at Christmas time. I regret my schedule prevents me from being with you all today, but you are in my thoughts and prayers. -Ronnie and Your Kewanee Family

I wanted to express my love and extreme gratitude I have for my Grandfather. I still remember the summers my brother and I stayed with him and Birdie, they were great times. He will be missed, but always remembered in our hearts.
