Michael L. Steven, 58, passed away peacefully December 6, 2013. He was born March 16, 1955 in Des Moines to Pete and Flora (Fisher) Steven.
Mike was a life-long resident of Des Moines. He was employed for many years by the State of Iowa as a Graphic Artist. He was a member of the Umpire Association of Des Moines and was a basketball referee. He was an avid sports fan – and loved Sunday night football! Mike took pleasure in coaching his girls and watching them play sports. He was a talented artist who loved his family, friends and loyal companions, Blitz and Havok. Mike will be greatly missed by all.
Mike is survived by his daughters, Maribeth (Benn) Stockton and Michelle Steven; father, Pete Steven; four nieces; one great niece; one great nephew; and many other loving relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Flora and step-mother, Nancy.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. A private family burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery. Family will greet friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

So sorry to hear Mike is no longer with us! I enjoyed working with him at DAS Print. He helped me feel at home from the first day. Prayers and happy memories to his family and friends!

I remember Mike fondly from our sporting events at Brody. Always with a big smile and kindness for all. Michele and Maribeth, he was so proud of you and with good reason. I am so sorry for your loss.

Maribeth and Michele - I am so sorry to hear about your dad. I have such great memories of when he coached my daughter Jena at South Des Moines Softball. He was not only a super coach, but a great person to have known. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family

Everyone will miss Mike Steven! He always saw the whole picture and saw the good in life and people. Glad he was a part of my Professional Life. I will miss our casual, honest and heartful discussions. My condolences to his friends and family! What a blessed Soul. Glad to know you and now you can spread smiles to God's Kingdom... You will be remembered forever!

My condolences and prayers go out to Sandi, his family, and his friends. I met mike only once and he was a very nice man. However, I can say that he must have been a pretty terrific guy. He made my friend Sandi one one the happiest woman around. After Mike came into her life, it was like a beam of light shone on her. We are all sad and sorry to see such a beautiful person leave us. The memories we will always cherish. May he rest in peace.

I'll miss your stories about the girls, talking about garage sales, and I'll miss you hanging out with the guys at work and laughing. I won't be able to say to Kara and Sandi, would you just listen that? He was part of our work family and we will miss him. Maribeth, Michelle and Sandi, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Maribeth and Michelle, I'm so sorry to here about your dad, he always had a smile on his face when it came to watching you girls. He would always let me know his thoughts on coaching. We went back a longtime.

Sorry to about Mike's death. Although I have not seen Mike in many years I still think of him and some of the conversations we had. I was Mike's professor at Grand View and he added energy and life to our classes together. I will carry Mike in my memories and wish his family my sincere regrets for a life gone to soon.

I was shocked to hear Mike died he was a great person Pete I am sorry for your loss I didn't even know he was ill he is.up there with his mom and that will make them both so happy. May God Bless your family Pete.

Through the years of knowing Mike there was always one true thing, he loved his daughters and was there for them anytime he could be. The Steven's family treated my daughter as one of their own and always made her feel welcome and I appreciate that. If I can ever help out with anything I hope they know to just ask. I know Mike is watching over his family and they will feel his love forever in their hearts. God bless the Steven's family.

Mike reintroduced me to life. He was a one in a million man. He was kind, gentle and very giving. His smile brightened your day, you couldn't help but smile back. His laugh was also one of a kind it made me giggle every time i heard it. He was my world and i don't know how I'm going to go on without him. We only had 2 years together but they were the best years of my life. I miss him terribly. He will always be in my heart, infact he fills my heart. I will always love you Mike.

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He was a good friend during the crazy 70's. He was a good Lincoln High buddy and was instrumental in getting me to go to Grand View College with him in 1978 where we launched our graphic design careers. We lost contact a few years later... which lasted for decades... but I always thought we'd get together again and hang out in our old age. I'm very sad that won't happen now.
