Richard "Dick" Engle, Sr.

Dick Engle went to be with the Lord, surrounded by loving family members and friend, on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa with a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., prior to the service. Interment will be at the Masonic Mausoleum at the Masonic Cemetery, 1550 48th Street, Des Moines, Iowa.

Dick, a lifelong resident of Des Moines, was born December 8, 1930. He was the son of Coila “Toots” (Strickler) and Francis “Sparky” Engle, who both precede him in death. He is survived by a daughter, Terri Lester of Toledo, Iowa; a son, Richard, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Karen Harmon of Albuquerque, New Mexico; four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also lovingly remembered by good friends, Betty and Danny Thurman, Jan and Bill Lock, all of Pleasant Hill, Iowa and Larry Harris of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Dick attended Lincoln High School. He worked for many years as a tile setter for the Iowa Marble and Tile Company, a family owned business.

He was a car enthusiast of the classics. There was almost always one parked, in its concours condition, in his garage. His last one was a 1962 black Chevrolet Coupe with the vanity plate, COOOL 62. He enjoyed attending swap meets, car shows, displaying his car and swapping stories. He especially liked spending his Tuesday summer evenings at the 5 & Diner’s Cruise Nights in Pleasant Hill where he and friends displayed their cars and again swapped stories.

Dick’s family and friends want to thank Parkridge Speciality Care, Pleasant Hill, Iowa and the staff at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa for the wonderful loving care that he received.
