Service Details

Larry L. “Pops” Payton, 72, died Friday, November 15, 2013 at Mercy Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial to follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Larry was born September 26, 1941 to Lorenzo “Bud” and Madeline Payton in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated East High School in 1960. Prior to enlisting in the United States Army, he worked for Western Tools. He enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Radio Operator from July 1962 to June 1965. In July 1980, he re-enlisted in the United States Army Reserves 372nd Engineer Group and Combat and retired as a Communications Chief and Master Sergeant in May 2001.

After returning from active duty in 1965, he briefly worked for Employees Mutual before starting his career at Northwestern Bell, where he worked from 1965 until retirement in 1990. After retiring from Northwestern Bell, Larry continued to work. He worked several years each working for the State of Iowa, Ikon Office Solutions and finally as a courtesy driver for Bud Mulcahy’s.

After retirement, he enjoyed spending his days at his son-in-law’s auto shop, Tom Davis Automotive, where he proclaimed himself as the “Chief Coffee Brewer and Doughnut Sampler.” Larry was an active member of Union Park Grace Fellowship Church, Capital City Moose Lodge and the Fairground Neighborhood Association. He attended his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting, school and church functions. He enjoyed racing where he was known as DDP (Daddy Deep Pockets), reading, camping outdoors, golf, playing jokes on everyone and spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Tom) Davis; sons, Lonnie (Tina) Payton and Luke (Courtney) Payton; grandchildren, Tiffany (Derek) Deaton, Brittany (fiancé Chris Blood) Stephen, Tom (Shallee Keenan) Davis, Michelle (Shane) Feltz and Kelsee, Preston, Blayze and Jaxon Payton; great-grandchildren, Johnathon Davis, Derek Jr. and Zachary Deaton, Jordan Davis and Tyler, Kalyssa, Alexa, Davis and Eli Feltz; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo “Bud” and Madeline Payton and son, Lance Payton.
