David S. Longnecker, 76, was born June 1, 1937, in Patterson, California, son of Archie and Beverly (Apland) Longnecker. He passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, after bravely facing his eight-year battle with prostate cancer.

David graduated from Alleman High School in 1955 and UNI, formerly ISTC, in 1961. He married Barbara Henderson on January 24, 1959. David worked for John Deere Des Moines Works until 1974, when he purchased and operated a John Deere dealership in Aplington until 1981. He retired from John Deere Financial in 2001.

David was civic minded, serving his community in many different capacities. He was a city councilman for Ankeny, a state representative for the Ankeny Jaycees, a charter member of DMACC school board, served as Mayor of Aplington, the city of Grimes representative for Polk County Economic Development, and a John Deere representative for United Way.

In his spare time, David enjoyed wood working, fishing in Canada, golfing and traveling. Above all else, he cherished the time spent with his family and friends.

David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Barbara; children, Craig Longnecker and Julie (Dennis) Jungling; grandchildren, Elizabeth Longnecker, Michael Longnecker, Krista Jungling and Lisa Jungling; great-granddaughter, Deja Jackson; brothers, Dan (Cindy) Longnecker, Robert (Linda) Longnecker and Ron (Debbie) Longnecker; sister-in-law, Julie (Dave) Wertman, as well as a host of other family and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 11, 2013, at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut Street in Ankeny. The family will greet friends Sunday evening from 4 to 6 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
