Joseph Keul
November 07, 2013
Joe Keul, Jr., passed away on November 7, 2013, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. He was born on Christmas day 1912 and grew up on the south side of Des Moines, attended Lincoln High School and was always a solid south-sider.
Joe served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Hersey in the pacific. After the war he worked in construction building the Al-Can highway. Joe was a strong willed, hard fisted union man, working many years as a business agent for Local 90 of the Teamsters. One of his first jobs as a young man was working at a bakery, and the family nick-name of “Dough-Dee” stuck with him all his life. Joe always enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and playing cards.
Joe is survived by his son, Ralph Keul (Marilyn); daughter, Janet Rivas (John); and step-daughter, Mary Ann Bougher (Kenny). Joe had six siblings and is survived by Al Keul (Bette), Alberta Whitlow, Martha Croft (George), and Marie Hubbard.
The body has been cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
The family wishes to thank Sunny View Care Center and all the compassionate folks there who helped Joe through his last days.

Was saddened to hear of Uncle Joe's (as I called him) passing. My Dad is Earl Keul, and his Dad (my Grandpa) was Otto Keul. I have fond, though vague memories of my brother Karl and I standing in a corn field in Iowa many years back and having a snake (some kind of racer) go by. As you can imagine, I hauled out, and remember Uncle Joe laughing quite a bit and trying to catch me. Really enjoyed his visits and listening to him, my Grandpa and Dad reminisce. Will never forget his love and passion for his family and his hunting dogs. The world has lost a great man, patriot and he will be missed. My condolences to his family and loved ones.
