Mary Helen Stoline, 102, passed away November 6, 2013, at Regency Care Center in Norwalk.

Helen was born December 20, 1910, to Nellie (James) and James McDonough in Des Moines. She graduated from North High School and Simpson College. Before WW II, she taught school in southern Iowa. During the war, she was a Red Cross worker at the Great Lakes Naval Station. After the war, she was a social worker in Jefferson, Iowa. She married John Melvin Stoline of Jefferson, who was a farmer and later retired from United Airlines. They bought a farm near Norwalk and raised a family. She was a member of Ruth Faith Circle United Methodist Church Women, served as President and also as a member of the PTA in Norwalk while her sons were in school, Precinct Committee Woman and Head Precinct Election Judge. Helen also was a substitute elementary through high school teacher in Norwalk. She was also a member of the Iowa Centenarians Club, and was the oldest resident of Regency Care Center. Helen enjoyed quilting, baking apple pies, and won a blue ribbon for her pie at the Warren County Fair. She and Melvin were also members of the Iowa Farm Bureau.

Helen is survived by her sons, Dean and his wife, Marilee (Rahe) Stoline, of Gaithersburg, MD, and James Stoline, of Affton, MO. and her grandson, David and his wife, Zoe (McDermott) Stoline.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Melvin Stoline.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, on November 11, 2013, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines, followed by burial at Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson, Iowa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the funeral home.
