Ralph P. Silver

Ralph P. Silver, 86, died Friday, October 25, 2013, at Unity Point Health Des Moines Methodist from leukemia. He was born April 19, 1927, to Roy and Winifred Silver in Altoona.
Ralph graduated from Bondurant High School where he played football and basketball. He served in the US Army during World War II, and married the love of his life, Virginia Hunt of Slater, in 1946.
Ralph was an entrepreneur his whole life, beginning with employment at John Deere, ownership of milk routes, and after moving to Iowa Great Lakes area in 1963, he continued with ownership of a beverage distributorship, and later was a partner and manager of Arnold’s Park Amusement Park. After retirement in 1989, he and Virginia returned to the Altoona area.
Ralph had a love for sports and people. He was a long-time member of Altoona United Methodist Church, King David Masonic Lodge #407 in Altoona, Za Ga Zig Shrine, and Bondurant American Legion Post 396.
Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 67½ years, Virginia; brothers, Donald (Phyllis) Silver, Wilbur (Evelyn) Silver, Keith Silver, and Carl (Christine) Silver; sister, Evelyn Little; many nieces and nephews; and a host of beloved friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy W. Silver; and sister, Wilma Newquist.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Avenue SW, with burial following at Berwick Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Altoona United Methodist Church.

Ralph was a great influence. I enjoyed working for him at the amusement park back in 73 though 75. Those are times I will always cherish. Ralph will be missed.

Sorry to hear about Ralph-what a great life he had.Have great memories of the old park days-from the Hut,Regal Beagle,2 t-shirt shops(1 was Professor Pudgies )The Clinic(1 yr-old Mococbo Club).Ralph ran the whole show-morning til nite-all summer long.Everybody liked him-what a great guy.THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.
