Michael Poll, 28, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 29 at 2:00 p.m. at The Bridge, 10025 NW 62nd Avenue in Johnston, IA. Visitation will be held Monday evening, October 28 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA from 4 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Michael was born on December 26, 1984 in Hamilton, MI. to Randy and Tami Poll. He graduated from Hamilton High School and Iowa State University. In 2008 Mike married Kim DeJong and started work with the grounds crew at the Iowa Cubs. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s (ALS). Together, they had a daughter Ruby Grace. Michael had a devoted love for his wife and daughter. He was a member of Meredith Drive Reformed Church. Michael enjoyed basketball, golf, and the University of Michigan sports. He took great pride in his lawn and had a passion for his work.
He is survived by his wife, Kim; daughter, Ruby Grace; his parents, Randy and Tami Poll; siblings, Matt (Lynnette) Poll, Mitch (Kristin) Poll, Melissa (Ian) O’Connor, grandparents, Jack Poll, Ivan (Connie) Top, his in-laws, Rod and Vi DeJong, siblings, Amy (Tim) Wilken, Gina (Mike) Dorr, Ryan (Amanda) DeJong, Jon (Karis) DeJong, grandparents, Lois DeJong; and many nieces and nephews.

Kim and Ruby and the rest of Mike's family. It is hard to find the words but I want to send my sympathies to you. I am the former MDA clinic nurse and knew Mike from the beginning of his diagnosis with ALS. He never came into clinic without a smile and brightened our day instead of the other way around it seemed. I know that I will never forget the impact on our lives as medical people who see much sadness every day. However there are certain individuals that remain with you and he was one of those.
And I wish you and your sweet daughter the best in the future.

When I was in my twenties, we had our family picture done in the home in Hamilton that Mike's grandfather and grandmother owned at the time. My sister, Ruth Alderink, lived across the street. I noticed the last name in the Holland Sentinel and the young age of Mike. My wife, Rebecca Essink, passed away from Lou Gehrig's in 2008, the same year that Mike was diagnosed. She was 45. Your husband was very young. I will pray for your young family.

Dear Poll Family-
I am saddened by the news of Mike's passing. I only worked with Mike for a short while at the Iowa Cubs, but I know how much he is loved by the Sports Turf Management crew.
