Francis Edward Woodward, 81, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Francis was born June 17, 1932, in Waukee, to John and Mary (Forrett) Woodward. He graduated from Waukee High School and served in the United States Army as a Corporal in the Korean War. Francis was honorably discharged on August 11, 1954. Following his tour of duty, he returned to the Des Moines area and attended Drake University. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Ruth Fitzsenry. He was a Cub Scout leader and a life-long Iowa and Chicago Cubs fan. Francis retired from Teamsters Local 90 in 1990, where he served as Secretary-Treasurer and Principal Officer. He was a member of American Legion-Bellizzi MacRae Chapter, the Knights of Columbus, Father Romanelli Council, and St. Anthony Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister.

Francis is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; children, Chris (Stacey) Woodward of Estherville, Iowa, Molly Woodward and John (Cheryl) Woodward of Urbandale, Frank (Kristi) Woodward of Omaha, Nebraska, and Katie (Tom) Jones of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren, Carina, Kami (Jake), Joe, Michelle, Jacob, Rachel, Billy, Reilly, and Brynn; brother, John (Marilyn) Woodward of Waukee; sister-in-law, Margaret Hooks of Phoenix, Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Avenue followed, by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service, Monday, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Foundation.
