Brian R. Smith

Brian R. Smith, age 29, passed away from this life on October 11, 2013, after suffering complications following open heart surgery. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing, and went to be with Jesus. He was born on July 10, 1984.

Brian was a student at Iowa State University in the Software Engineering program, and had previously attended DMACC. He enjoyed working with and fixing computers. Prior to becoming a college student he had worked a few years for Larry's Window Service, and he found it an adventure to clean the windows of high-rise buildings.

Brian was a musician as well and played the guitar and saxophone, and he used his talents in high school in various bands. He enjoyed going to various music concerts as he liked a wide range of musical types - classical, jazz, rock. He also loved animals, and especially his current dog, Kiara, a Norwegian Elkhound. Brian spoiled her with lots of attention and she loved him.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Marilyn and Dan Waugh; his father, Karl (Jennifer) Smith; his sister, Stacy; brothers Jesse (Kenzie) Smith and Bradley Smith; step-brother, Zachary Miller; his grandmother, Darlene Garwick; his significant other, Rachel Emmons; his step-grandparents, Bill and Marie Waugh; step-sister, Danette (Mike) Sullivan; step-brother, Matt (Kristie) Waugh; and many extended family members including cousins, aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Garwick, his aunt, Linda Joy Rutenbeck, and his grandfather, Robert Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at Grace Church, 4200 E. 25th Street in Des Moines, followed by burial at Avon Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
