Clara T. Matney

On October 7, 2013, Clara Telitha (Douglas) Matney joined her Lord and heavenly family. She was 92 years old.

Clara was born on July 17, 1921, to George and Julia Douglas in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1938, she married Dee H. Matney, Sr. They celebrated their 50th anniversary before Dee passed in 1988.

She had five children who will cherish her memory: Julia “Cricket” Bixler (Jerry) of Altoona, Donna Cosner (Roy, deceased) of Des Moines, Dee Matney, Jr. (Judy) of Benson, AZ, Frank Matney (Ann) of Des Moines and Dixie Gruber (Jake) of Des Moines.

Clara was a stay at home mother for our growing up years. She was so creative, making beautiful quilts, ceramics, cross stitch, embroidery, and always ready to try something new. She also loved to travel, visiting Dee and Judy in Arizona and taking several trips with Donna and Roy and Frank and Ann. A great pleasure was getting all of her family together.

Her greatest accomplishment was raising five loving, caring children who married loving caring spouses. She was very proud of them all.

She is survived by her children, youngest sister, Martha “Baby” Comegys of Des Moines and 17 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 49 great-great-grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dee H. Matney, Sr., son-in-law, Roy Cosner, Sr., great-granddaughters, Jenna and Jordan, and siblings, George, Ed, Joe, Mage, Hope, and Millie.

We will all miss her so much!

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines with burial to follow at Avon Cemetery. Family will greet visitors for one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of Clara.
