Velva Rogers was born on December 9, 1920, in Creston, Iowa, and passed away on October 6, 2013, in Des Moines.

Velva was preceded in death by her husband, John Rogers; mother, Alzora E. Cooper; and grandparents, Nickolas and Esther Lillie. She is survived by her daughter, Valinda (John) Coker; grandchildren, Michelle Coker and Travis (Teri) Coker; and her great-grandchildren, Logan, Quinten, and Emmah.

Velva graduated from Greenfield High School and A.I.B. College in Des Moines. Her first job was with Stocks & Bonds where she was employed for one year. She then worked at Dental Lab for 20 years, East Des Moines Club for 17 years, the Des Moines Airport for 19 years, the Savory Hotel, and Hotel Fort Des Moines in the banquet department for 53 years.

In her golden years she attended the Senior Center for seven years, where she met a lot of good friends. She was a card player and enjoyed church bazaars. Velva was also a lover of flowers.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines. On Thursday the family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m., at Steen Funeral Home, 101 SE 4th Street in Greenfield, Iowa, followed by a graveside service at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, at Greenfield Cemetery.
