Helen Speed, 98, of Carlisle, Iowa went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2013. She was born August 18, 1915 near Milo, Iowa to Roy and Bertha (Ogan) Chase. On July 26, 1937, she married Forrest Speed. They were blessed with two children, David and Mitzi. Helen and Forrest lived in Carlisle, Iowa for 59 years. They were married for over 73 years.

Helen was a homemaker. She taught Sunday school, played the piano and organ, sang in the church choir, was a seamstress, knitted, crocheted, quilted, and was an excellent cook. Her most cherished times were spent with Forrest and raising their two children.

Helen was a devoted Christian and prayer warrior. She loved and was loved by many people. She and Forrest were past members of Missionary Baptist Church in Carlisle. More recently they became members of Lighthouse Community Church where they attended and served until their health no longer allowed.

Helen will be greatly missed by her children, David (Donna) Speed of Carlisle and Mitzi (Richard) Blahnik of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Lori Carrara and LeAnna (Sal) Carreon both of Des Moines; six great-grandchildren, Tia, Anthony, Andrew, Brock, Salena and Vincent; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Forrest; her parents; three sisters, Grace Northrop, Esther Dey and Mary Middleton; and her brother, Floyd Chase.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest with her husband Forrest at Pleasantville Cemetery.
