Charles “Chuck” Jeffries, 78, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2013, at HCI Care Services on 56th Street.
Chuck was born October 26, 1934, in Panora, Iowa, to Paul and Gladys Jeffries. He worked in civil engineering for the Iowa Air National Guard for 36 years before his retirement in 1989, where he obtained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Following his retirement, he went to work for Payless Cashways for 10 years, and was a SPAL (standardized performance assessment lab) for Des Moines University. Chuck was an avid reader, and he loved history, fishing, and traveling. He was a handyman and loved gadgets and tools. Chuck will be remembered by his family and friends as a true gentleman and keeping chivalry alive. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Jeffries; children, Mark (Nadine) Jeffries, Patty (Brian) Neal, Paula (Jim) Cox, and Matt Jeffries; sister, Marva (Jim) Conrad; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
As his last selfless act, Chuck’s wishes were to donate his body to Des Moines University. A Visitation of Remembrance will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2013, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street.
Memorial contributions may be directed to HCI Care Services 56th.

I worked at the Guard during the years the Chief was there. He was a huge credit to the unit and a great guy. Look to God for comfort till you see him again.

I was so sorry to hear of Chuck's death. I worked at the ANG and was the TODO clerk in Maintenance, He always had a smile and ready too help, My sympathy is with you all at this sad time.Roberta (Bobbie) Nelson

I am sorry to hear of Chuck's passing. I worked with him in SPAL at DMU. He was always a gentleman and always had a smile on his face. I have a smile on my face as I think of him. I am blessed to have known him.

So sorry for the loss of your loved one. Chuck was a great person and will be missed greatly. You probably don't remember me but my sister, Polly and my brother, Randy and I were under the care of Chuck's parents home for 7 or 8 years. We were their last foster children they had. I am so sorry for your loss. Please find comfort in knowing that the God of the Bible will do away with death, as stated at Isaiah 25:8. He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord, will certainly wipe the tears from all faces. And the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for Jehovah himself has spoken it.

Chuck was fun. Never saw him angry or had a unkind word. Both at the Guard for years. Talked to Jeff, Sat Drill day, when the unit was to be changed, all the old guys were there. we will miss him. Love & Prayers

Chuck will be missed by many. He was from my hometown and knew his family well. I enjoyed working with him at the Iowa Air Guard for 22 years.

I had the good fortune to work in the Civil Engineering Office the summer before I started college in 1973 and the best part of the experience was working under the direction of 'Sgt Jeffries'. This was prior to the inclusion of women in the Guard and, while my presence was probably somewhat of a pain for all, he made me feel welcome and valued. I learned a lot about professionalism in the workplace, about developing friendships there and perhaps most importantly about having fun while working hard. His love and pride for his family was always clear and I know this must be very hard for you. Having lost my dad in May I know that only precious memories and time can help ease the pain. Thinking of you all.

Chief Jeffries, was a leader among men. His attention to the junior troops was a trademark that made him a mentor to all that knew him. I had the honor of serving and working with him in what seemed like a short time but gained a lifetime of experience. RIP Chief, you will be missed.
