Service Details

Mildred “Millie” Cummins, 74, passed away October 1, 2013 at Unity Point Health Des Moines Methodist.

Millie was born March 3, 1939, she grew up in the Fort Dodge area and moved to Des Moines 49 years ago. She was a neat person and liked everyone. Millie was fun to be around, loving, compassionate, loyal, forgiving, ornery, always first to help out anyone in need and generous to a fault. She loved horses, butterflies, lady bugs, and music, especially George Jones and Johnny Cash. She had a green thumb and loved planting flowers. Millie was a tough old bird and worked hard all of her life raising four children on her own. She worked as a bartender and also was a production worker for Windsor Windows. Millie beat inoperable lung cancer 19 years ago when she was given only three to six months to live. Dr. Schreck called her his miracle. She thought she was a “hotsy totsy” based on pictures her kids found in which she was always striking a pose. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her grandkids.

Millie is survived by her son, Alan (Stacey) Cummins; daughters, Desiree Duran and Rose (Carl) Custer; sisters, Loretta Gilday, and Carol Bane; brothers, Sheldon Beebe and Bruce Barton; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her cat, Slickery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Merlin and Elsie Beebe; and her daughter, Naomi Green.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, October 4, 2013 followed by a Service of Remembrance at 12 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A private family burial will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
