Cyndy Thompson, 69, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2013.
Cyndy was born January 1, 1944 in Grinnell, Iowa. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dude Thompson; daughter, Tammy Garr; grandchildren, Johnny (Tomekia) Hadaway, Joey Quade, and Caitlyn Quade; and great-grandsons, Camdon and Colton. Cyndy was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Effie Duffus and her granddaughter, Jennifer Hadaway.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue on Saturday, September 21, 2013 with a visitation for one hour prior to the service. Casual dress is encouraged.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Cyndy.

Cyndy was a kind, sweet, person who always had a smile. I knew her from the West Des Moines Writer's Group. I too enjoyed having her read whatever portion of her story she'd written the week before. Cyndy never waited for the muse to write, she wrote faithfully. I am so happy that I got to know her. My condolences to her family. Virginia

It is difficult to find the right words during this time of grief.
Life is its own story and Cyndy lived hers well.

We are so sorry about Cyndy's passing. She was not only a classmate (class of 1961 Montezuma High School), but a friend. She volunteered her time here in Montezuma at the Poweshiek County Genealogy Society and we would visit about many things. She loved her family and dogs, and she was excited about the book that she was writing, and I had looked forward to someday reading her story. She loved going to her writer group when she could. We will miss her at the library and at our class reunions, but most of all I personally will miss the visits we had while eating lunch at the library. Our condolences to the family.

Cyndy was a kind, decent, caring, sensitive human being, and she also was a wonderful fiction writer.
I met Cyndy when I joined a writer group, 6 or more years ago, and was immediately drawn to her warmth. Then hearing her read her own work, I admired her writing skills and her input into other writers' stories. At the time of her passing, she was working on a novel about sisters--twins, their joy, conflicts, and heartbreaks--during the Vietnam War era. She created all these wonderful, crazy, colorful characters who came from a small town. She beautifully captured their lives. I'd tell her that her story was like a "security blanket" to me. I always eagerly anticipated her next chapter.
And I was delighted and fascinated about her experiences working with her husband, Dude, a race car driver and competitor. She didn't have one boastful, full-of-herself bone in her body as she told about working in the "pit." Absolutely refreshing!
I feel such emptiness that I will no longer see her gentle smile and encouraging straight-forward talk. My condolences to her family. Sally
