Richard “Sam” Allen Sample, 82, passed away at his home on Friday, September 13, 2013.

Sam was born October 18, 1930 in Des Moines to Allen and Gladys (Woods) Sample. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong resident of the Des Moines area and was a successful entrepreneur. Sam and JoAnne owned Jennie’s Original State Fair Grinder for many years. He also ran Karla’s Korner, M&S Eggs in Adel, and many root beer stands over the years. Sam also worked as a meat cutter for Casson Meats. He was involved in many state and county fairs and the Cattle Congress. Sam enjoyed bowling and was an avid duck hunter. Above all, he loved being a dad and a grandpa. He helped raised six daughters and one son, Laureca Pettey (Don) of Altoona, Shelia Armstrong of Des Moines, Ramona Brandt of Des Moines, Michelle Munoz (David) of Storm Lake, Suzanne George (Matt) of Des Moines and Karla Rose Armstrong, and Donald Wayne Armstrong, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday evening, also at the funeral home.

In addition to his wife, Josephine and daughters, Sam is also survived by 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and sister, Rosie Hollingshead (Marvin). He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Gloria; son, Donald Wayne Armstrong, Jr.; and daughter, Karla Rose Armstrong.
