Joseph “Pete” Melcher, 54, died September 7, 2013, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Pete was born February 14, 1959 in Des Moines to Joe and Barbara Melcher. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1977 and Grandview University in 1981.
Pete worked for Custom Christmas Lighting in Minneapolis. He was loved by all who met him, he never met a stranger, and he helped those in need. Pete enjoyed boating and water sports, and traveling the U.S. and abroad. Pete was an avid storyteller.
Pete is survived by his mother, Barbara Melcher; brother, Matt (Shannon) Melcher; sister, Mary Jo (Mike) Romanco; nephews, Michael and Kyle; and his niece, Jillian. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Melcher, and his grandparents.
Burial will take place at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 21, 2013, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lovilia, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Barb, Matt and Mary,
I am so sorry for your loss. I only got to meet Pete a few times, but he struck me as a very loving son, brother and somebody who it would be a privilege to call a friend. May memories of your your happy times with Pete help bring you strength through this difficult and sad time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Barb, I am so sad to hear of your loss. I know it has been a few years since our time at Meredith but I stll think of you and the good times. I also remember Pete from Lincoln even though I was a year ahead of him. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I worked with Pete at CCL for more than six years and im thankful for every moment we had. No matter the situation Pete was able to keep things in perspective. He always made sure others were okay and was willing to lend a hand. Pete never met a stranger, only friends. His story telling was one of a kind, sometimes so spectacular and far fetched but you knew they were true because thats just the kind of huy Pete was. Adventerous, friendly, humurous, intelligent, and kind. Thank you for all of the great memories Pedro. Miss and love ya buddy

I am sad to hear of this loss. Peter was a friend. He always had a smile when I saw him. Seems like he was always off on a new adventure. I admired his spirit and will miss hearing new Peter adventure stories. Prayers and peace for your family.

Pete and I met 36 years ago on a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon in the fall of 1977. As I sat on the front porch of mom & dads, this skinny, goofy, cheerful boy with arms flappin and a definate spring in his step noticed me and said " HI! " me being a sophmore @ LHS for only a day or two sprung to my feet, skipped down the yard to say "my name is Beth, whats yours and do you go to Lincoln?" That warm, fall afternoon a lifelong friendship began. Pete and I were buddies. Thru the years we lost track of one another but, about ten years ago our paths crossed and joined again during some rough times in each of our lives. WE HELD ON TIGHT. I THANK GOD FOR PETE. He was ALWAYS bright sunshine on gray days...my thoughts and prayers are with you and my memories of Mr. Pete Melcher warm my heart and soul just like that sunny fall afternoon in 1977. Aunt Barb, Mary Jo, and Matt - I am so sad about Pete. Words just aren't enough. I love this picture of him...made me smile when I saw it..I could see Uncle Joe and my Dad..and Mary's son Andy...just amazing. Big hugs to all of you...we will see you Saturday. Love, Melanie
