Michael Anthony Carter, 61, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones Monday, September 9, 2013. He was born April 28, 1952, to R.C. Carter and MaeOla Steward in Des Moines.
Michael worked as Human Resources Manager for the City of Des Moines. Michael was a proud brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He enjoyed spending time with his family, riding horses, and had a love for his extended family of farm animals. He was an avid gardener.
He is survived by his mother, MaeOla Steward; brother, DeWayne (Betty) Wease; daughters, Theresa (Arnel Dubinovic) Hanson, Tracey (Narcus) Piper, and Alexandra Gaffney-Peden; son, Aaron Peden; as well as his grandchildren, Destinae, Charles, Tyler, Jakob, and Olivia.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, R.C. Carter, and sister, Cecilia Steward.
Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, September 13, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home.

I was so saddened to hear about Mike's passing. He watched my dogs numerous times, and I enjoyed seeing him outside of his business suits and in his farmer attire! That was the place he belonged. He was such a special person, who always had a smile on his face. He will truly be missed! His family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Mike was a family friend and hunting partner of my step-father Rob Robinson. I had been trying to become a Des Moines Police Officer for years and was on my 3rd time and had just received another rejection letter from the city. I was saddened by the recent letter but Mike told me to keep my head up. A few days later I received a phone call to start the academy. I was elated and cant help but think Mike had something to do with it. For me, Mike will always be a positive person in my life and a GOOD guy as someone else put it. For 8 yrs I have always tried to be a Police Officer Mike would be proud of. I will truly miss you friend..Thad

We morn for the wonderful man who always made us laugh. I'm so sad to hear of Michael leaving us so soon. The tears just keep coming. He always made you feel so special. I spent much time on his ranch laughing, playing and working. He will be so missed. Michael was so proud of his church and he is now where we all hope to be someday. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

I am deeply saddened to read of Michaels passing and my condolences to his family. We worked at Younkers downtown in the late 70s and when we both left there we lost track of each other. I remember some of the fashion shows where he modeled the mens line. He always enjoyed himself, on the runway as well as around the downtown and occasionally the Merle Hay store.
I also remember his backyard garden and how full his house was with plants. We had a few early weekend morning fishing expeditions there in Des Moines too. Michael was really proud of his children.
Over the years whenever I saw a home with plants and perhaps an inviting river begging for someone to fish it, I thought of those years back when I knew Michael.
I am glad to know that Michael found the joy of the country, as I also have again; that his last years were full of the outdoors, plants and his animals. He will be greatly missed by those that knew him.

I am incredibly shocked and very sad to hear of Michael's passing. Remembering the great times we shared over many years. I so much wish I could have had the opportunity to say good bye. Peace be with you Michael and your family.

Mike and I worked together at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. He most recently had stopped by the house to check on my progress on my pole building. Stayed and visited for quite awhile.Saw him at Farm & Home in Winterset after his hip replacement. He was very proud of his progress. He told me "I just have to be careful not to do anything stupid". What a fine gentleman. A meticulous dresser. A GOOD guy. He was truly enjoying himself in retirement. I am saddened by his death. Prayers for his family.

I was shocked and surprised and more than saddened to learn of Mike's very untimely death. I knew him from North High School and was delighted to have the occasional, short visit when we ran into each other during the course of employment with the City of Des Moines.
He was a wonderful and kind man and whenever dealing with city employees, he was a just and fair person.
I will miss him!

I am deeply saddened to learn that we have lost a good man. I had the privilege to work, play and socialize with Michael. We have shared meals, played tennis, racquetball and skied together. My heart is heavy at this time, but I know that he is in the best hands. My sincere condolences to the Carter family for your great loss. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the great good fortune to work with Michael Carter during my tenure with the City of Des Moines, and knew him to be an honest, ethical, and committed public service and human resource professional. I valued his advice and counsel, and his early passing leaves the world a a bit of a lesser place; however, we are all better off from his having been among us. May he rest in peace.

Michael was a blessing to everyone related to Link Associates. As a member of our Board of Directors, he gave willingly of his time and talents, volunteered generously and always brought his laughter, positive thoughts and compassion for everyone.
