Mary Ellen Deal, 86, died Tuesday, September 3, 2013, at Mitchell Village Care Center in Mitchellville. She was born July 24, 1927, to Royal and Helen Lee in Wick, Iowa.
Mary, with her husband Dale, owned and operated Dale E. Deal Construction Co. from 1960 until 1992. She was a long time member of Altoona United Methodist and Methodist Women’s Club, and volunteered much of her time for her community including teaching Sunday School.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Pamela (James) Harris, Barbara (Paul) Woods, Janet (Peter) Vielhaber, and Lori (Michael) Swim; and daughter-in-law, Crickett Deal. She is also survived by her brothers, Keith (Maxine) Lee, Judson Lee, and Paul (Phyllis) Lee, all of Indianola. Mary has 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Deal in 2007; son, William John Deal; parents, Royal and Helen Lee; sisters, Alice McConnell, Pauline Banks, and Lois Stroud; infant sister, Dorothy Lee; and brother, Raymond Lee.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, with a private burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, Iowa. Family will greet friends 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Altoona Lions Club or Mitchell Village Care Center.

I knew your mom and dad through the Altoona Lions Club. They were great people. I was sorry to see that your mother passed away this past week and wanted to attend the funeral services but was unable to. I will mail a memorial check to the Lions Club. You have my deepest sympathy.

Pam, it was just two weeks ago that you visited me when Dad died and we talked about your Mom. I will never forget how much fun she was when we were growing up and how she helped me both times Mom was sick. She was a very special lady. Marjorie

Pam, Barbara, Janet and Lori, I'm thinking of you and remembering your Mom, now in heavenly peace after a long full life. I remember how Aunt Mary's beautiful eyes and smile would light up a room, she was always having fun. And she was so proud of her family. I remember big holiday dinners at Aunt Mary and Uncle Dale's --having fun with our Lee Clan cousins. And I remember how she helped me get my first job-- teaching at Mitchellville Elementary. Lori, Pam, Barb, Janet, So sorry to hear Of your Mom Mary's passing away. Your mom was such a blessing to me when I was younger. Lori I still remember all the crazy times we had with your mom, especially her calling me "Shellie Bell". Take care, you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Pam, Barb, Janet, and Lori...I am saddened to read about your Mom's passing. I have many wonderful memories of the years in the old neighborhood and at church.
