Service Details

George Alvin Hollingsworth, 77, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Services will be held 3:30 p.m., Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street with visitation one and one-half hours prior.

George had a very full and happy life. He was born November 3, 1935, in Des Moines, IA, to Harry and Mary Hollingsworth. He graduated from East High School, and in 1953 married Nancy, the love of his life. They were blessed with a son and the family shared a very close relationship. The family grew by two grandchildren, and then three great-grandchildren. George was the best grandpa a child could have. Family was always a priority for George.

George started his first job at age 20 in Story City, where he worked for a furniture factory. The furniture industry was where he worked the bulk of his younger career other than working as a West Des Moines Police Officer for two years. George then returned to the furniture industry and worked in DeWight, IL, Chicago, IL, and Rogers, AR. Rogers was not the place for George as it was a dry county. ? The family then moved back to Des Moines where he bought a bar and grill, King’s Wood Inn located at 4th and Grand, which he ran for two years. George finally found his niche at Carlson Industrial Supplies where he worked for twenty plus years. This position involved some wonderful travel, but George missed home and decided to open Des Moines Paper and Supply. He sold that business at age 65 when he retired. Not one to sit still, George took a part-time position with Southeast Polk School in maintenance, and later with the Altoona Hy-Vee, delivering flowers. He said delivering flowers was the most rewarding job ever since he always received a smile and a thank you.

For fun, George enjoyed playing lots of golf at Terrace Hills Golf course; and he and Nancy made many friends at the Elk’s Lodge.

We will all be glad when we see him again (and we will). Until then, his memory will be cherished by his wife, Nancy; son, Mark; granddaughter, Keri N. Hollingsworth; great-grandchildren, Hennasie and Tatum Hollingsworth and Trehver Wright; sister, Flora and brother, Lloyd, and many wonderful friends and family. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Merwin and Willis; sisters, Enid and Myrtle; and grandson Chad Hollingsworth.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of George.
