Eugene Aswegan

Eugene “Gene” Aswegan, Sr. passed away on his 82nd birthday on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 31, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, with a visitation for an hour prior to the service.

Eugene was born in Fern, Iowa, to Albert and Pearl (Harris) Aswegan. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, and gardening. Eugene was an Iowa Hawkeye and Minnesota Vikings fan. He also enjoyed watching college sports.

Eugene is survived by his children, George (Gloria) Aswegan, Eugene (Melody) Aswegan, Jr., Tammie (Gary) Schroeder, and Cheryl Negrete; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren and one on the way; brother, Jim Aswegan; sisters, Gladys (Richard) Eveland, Clara (Pat) Lawler, Betty (David) Ellenwood, and Virginia (Jack) Scoonover; two step-children; loving dog, Cricket; and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Aswegan; second wife, Dorothy Gorman-Aswegan; daughter, Vicky Jewell; five brothers; and one sister.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in Eugene’s name.
