Virginia Schlotterbeck

Virginia Schlotterbeck, 89, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2013, at UnityPoint Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by her family.

Services for Virginia will be held Wednesday, 12 noon, on August 28, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at the funeral home from 6 to 8 pm.

Virginia was born November 15, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lloyd and Gladys Harris. She married Bill Schlotterbeck, the love of her life, on August 29, 1941, celebrating 71 years of marriage which followed a long courtship that started in junior high school.

She was a bookkeeper for Bill’s Super Valu for several years and later became a homemaker. Her hobbies included shopping, reading, and playing the slots, but ultimately Virginia devoted her life to raising her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, rarely missing any activities they were involved in.

Virginia leaves behind to cherish her memory; husband, Bill; sister, Pat (Bill) Erickson; daughter, Bonnie (Terry) Gilchrist; son, Paul (Patty); daughter-in-law, Lynda; four grandchildren, Jeff (Carrie) Gilchrist, Jennie Gilchrist, Jodie (Donovan) Schlotterbeck, and Tracie (Dan) Johnston; and six great-grandchildren, Jaren, Caitlin, Macie, Lina, Nathan, and Hunter; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her children, Billy, Peggy, and Jeffrey; and granddaughter, Jessica Schlotterbeck.

The family would like to thank the UnityPoint Hospice Team for their exceptional care during Virginia’s final months.
