Neil Lunn Merten, 97, was born December 15, 1915, in Des Moines, the son of Harris and Ada Belle (Lunn) Merten. He passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

Neil was an Army Veteran, proudly serving his country in World War II. He retired from Brown Brothers as an electrician after many years of faithful service. His passion was farming and spending time on his land.

Neil is survived by his children, Marjorie (David) McFann of Columbia, Missouri, Linda Smith of Pleasant Hill, Richard (Lynn) Merten of Sully, and Jack (Karla) Merten of Mitchellville; grandchildren, Michael McFann, Heather (Tim) Abrams, David (Marijane) Smith, Laura (Bill) Barnes, Lisa (Kevin) Ohnemus, Eric (Sheri) Merten, and Chris (Debbie) Merten; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and one on the way; sister, Vivian Davis of Pueblo, Colorado; other loving relatives; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna Merten; granddaughter, Bailey Oltrogge; and his siblings, Kenneth Merten, Beulah Moore, and Russell Merten.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 23, 2013, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Avenue SW, with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
