David A. Golay, 72, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2013.

Dave was born on December 9, 1940 in Des Moines to Robert and Lorraine (Stover) Golay. He enjoyed camping, traveling, biking and bowling. He always had his camera around his neck, and was his grandson's biggest hockey fan. One of his favorite places was Alaska where he was stationed in the Air Force and revisited over the years with his family. Dave was an avid Hawkeye sports fan, football being his favorite. He was known for his creativity and innovation with woodworking. Dave loved to read and was continually pursuing knowledge. His family always came first and above all he enjoyed time spent with his grandsons.

Dave is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; daughter, Trisha Swenson; grandsons, Cole Swenson and Jamie Comstock; sisters, Ruby Stoner, Karen (Pat) Mienke and Sandy (Ron) McClurg; mother-in-law, Sara Foster; and many special family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Golay; grandson, Noah Swenson; parents, Robert and Lorraine; brothers, Daryl and Jerry; father-in-law, Farrell Foster; and other special family members.

A memorial visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 12, 2013 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 13 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation for the maintenance and development of central Iowa bike trails.

To do good in this world and help your fellow neighbor, to add humor even in tough moments, and to share love of traveling, life and nature with those closest to you... these things will be Dave's legacy.
