Service Details
Roy L. Pollock, 84, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Kavanagh House. A memorial visitation will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines on Thursday, August 1, 2013 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30.
Roy was born on March 1, 1929 in Humeston, IA to Jessie (Crawford) and Bruce Pollock. He was a Navy WWII and Korean War Veteran; and then worked for the US Postal Service for 30+ years as a letter carrier. He also held several part-time jobs over the years. After retirement, Roy worked at Golferama and as he loved golf, this particular job was quite enjoyable. He delivered golf carts all over the Midwest and occasionally had the luck to play in tournaments some even with celebrities. Roy was a handyman, master builder to family, and neighbors alike. He loved family and friends and was a good husband to his wife for 66 years. He especially loved his grandkids and great-grandkids as well as his little dog, Bubba.
Roy is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Kathy Sergio; sons, Randy (Julienne) and Michael (Rhonda); grandchildren, Anthony (Oi) Sergio, Leanne Sergio, Megan (David) Daughenbaugh, Zac (Kate) Pollock, Ryan (Shazasha) Pollock, Jake Pollock, and Jason Pollock; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Max and Rex; and sister, Marie Adams.

I am Secretary-Treasurer of the local letter carrier union of which Roy was a member. We want to express our condolences. We just learned of his passing. The Branch will be making a memorial donation to Kavanagh House.

Betty, Kathy and family,
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Betty, I will forever be grateful to you and Roy for the friendship you shared with my mom and dad for so many years.
I know that somewhere out there, Roy just sat down with Tom and Jane for a plate of chicken spaghetti casserole...

I spent a lot of time at Roy's parents home as his sister Marie and I were very good friends. We graduated from high school together and remained friends until Marie's death. Roy's mom was like a second mom to me and she treated me like her own. She was a tough "Ole Bird" and Roy was a lot like his mother. When Roy's sister Marie was dying and Roy was at her bedside I saw that Roy did have a soft spot in his heart.
I have so many fond memories of all the Pollock's and Betty thanks for putting up with Marie and I.
Remember Betty I am only a phone call away.

I want Roy's family to know that Roy and Betty are the best neighbors in Des Moines. Now, almost 12 years ago I moved next to Roy and Betty. During that first week Roy saw me trying to attach a garden hose to the front faucet. Roy walked across the front yards carrying a cup of coffee and introduced himself to me. He had me go down to the basement turn the water on to the faucet. By the time I got back to the front yard Roy had started replacing the faucet with a new one. Now whenever I turn the faucet on, I remember Roy's generosity to me. Roy was a good man.

Betty & Family, I hardly know where to begin, I spent so much time at your house with Marie, your Mom & Dad means the world to me. I had a great visit with Roy & Betty and so many memories we shared, the last time I was home. Take good care of your Mom, your all in my thoughts and prayers. You had a great Dad. God Bless his soul. Love you guys.
