Linda Bates, 69, went to be with the Lord, Monday, July 29, 2013, at Bright Kavanagh in Des Moines. She was born January 9, 1944, in Des Moines, the daughter of Pete and Goldie Gillum.
Linda was a member of Bethany New Life Christian Fellowship, where she loved to visit with friends and family. She had an enormously large extended family that shoe loved, cared for, and prayed for and with. Linda enjoyed spending time with family, trips with Norman and family, gardening and taking care of her home that she was very proud of. She had an artistic ability that most were not aware of. Linda loved the holidays and was known for her scalloped corn, cut out cookies, red cake, fudge and more. She always took the time, to listen and be there and knew when something was wrong and insisted on you telling her. Her grandkids were her delight and she theirs. Linda and Norman would have celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on August 3rd.
Linda is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Norman; son, Norm, Jr. (Diana) Bates; and daughter, Shelly (Bob) Heggen; grandchildren, Ryan, Emily and Ethan; siblings, Guy (Sandy) Gillum, Anna Mould, Ron (Jan) Gillum, Terry (Norma) Gillum, and Marcia (Rick) Abell; numerous nieces and nephews; other loving relatives and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother-in-law, Dick Mould; nephew, Chad Gillum; niece, Heather Gillum; great-niece, Melissa Gillum; great-nephew, Anthony Gillum.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2013, at Berean Assembly of God, 5299 E. University Ave., Pleasant Hill.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Bethany New Life Christian Fellowship Building Fund in loving memory of Linda.

I grew up with Linda in Sunday School. Our families attended Bethany Open Bible Church, located at SE 7th and Vale. I fondly recall the pews that her family, and mine, sat in on Sunday. It seems as though it were yesterday. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Linda's family and friends at this difficult time.

Linda was always the cousin with the soft voice and gentle spirit. She married a mild mannered man of integrity. You both are wonderful Christians as my sister and brother in the Lord, but very special cousins as a side benefit. Thank you Norm for the faithful years of love and devotion to your bride. Our family in heaven is growing quickly, never to be apart again. Our prayers cover you Norman, and all our cousins, even as the Spirit is with you all. Our deepest sympathy for each one during this time of sorrow.

Norm and Linda, Fate made us neighbors but love made us family. I will miss your laughter, our talks and all of the love you gave. My family is much richer thanks to you both. I am sure Linda is at peace now and is by the Lords side. I'll be sure to keep the shades drawn.; )

Aunt Linda, I know where you are. I know who your with. And, i know you are now watching over all of us with Grandma by your side. You are at peace now. And that makes me happy, because i know you are happy. I will deeply miss you and all the years you scratched my back! And i promise that the next time i see you i will scratch your back!
