Helen I. Drottz

Helen Irene Drottz, 98, passed away at Mitchellville Care Center on Thursday, July 18, 2013, following a stroke.

Helen was born on December 20, 1914, in Ohio. After her mother died in childbirth, she was put on a train to Mitchellville at age 9 to live with a relative, Millie Weaver. Over the years, Helen worked as a cashier at Union 76 Truck Stop. Later she was employed as a housekeeper at Mitchellville Care Center. Helen married Russell Gaylord Drottz in October, 1931. She lived on many farms in the Polk County area. Helen was a member of United Methodist Church.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2013, at United Methodist Church, 200 2nd Street NW in Mitchellville, with visitation for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Mitchellville Cemetery.

Helen is survived by her son, Dale (Pat) of Mitchellville; daughter, Ruth (Jim) Wilson of Pawnee, IL; brothers, Daniel Scholl of Ohio and Marvin (Viola) Scholl of Sugar Grove NC; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Westholm of Woodbury, MN, and Pauline Drottz of Des Moines; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; children, Verl Drottz and Mary Hommer; grandson, David Drottz; and sisters, Esther and Annebell, both of Ohio; and brother, Jay.
