Service Details

Norma Lorraine Churchill Valasek, 85, was born November 29, 1927, in Fremont, Nebraska, the daughter of Art and Nellie Churchill. She passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013.

She attended and graduated from rural schools in the Fremont area. Norma met William Valasek while he was home on leave from the service in Omaha, Nebraska. They were married July 21, 1946, when William returned from the service.

Norma and William were the parents of five children. They farmed for 47 years in the Osage, Iowa, area. They were married 57 years when William passed away on September 27, 2003.

Norma then moved to Altoona, Iowa, after William’s death to be closer to her family. She would spend three of the coldest months in Florida with one of her daughters.

Norma became a member of the Adventure Life Church in Altoona. She loved flowers – she could make any flower or plant grow, bloom, and thrive. Her hobby was making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls and teddy bears.

Norma worked 20 years at the Faith Home and was a Home Health Aide for 11 years. She enjoyed her friends at the Senior Center, especially her Thursday afternoon gambling with her friend, Margaret, and Rubic’s Cube games on Friday. Norma will be greatly missed.

Norma is survived by her children, Steve (Rheta), Nancy (Dave), Janet (Keith), and Carol (Tony); her sister, Nella; grandchildren, Tammy, Brandy, Carl, Chad, and Neil; great-grandchildren, Austin, Samson, Conner, and Duncan; other loving relatives; and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; son, Larry; sisters, Wanda and Marcie; brothers, Reginald and Duaine; and her parents.

The family will greet friends from 12 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona, with funeral services beginning at 2 p.m. Graveside services will be 12 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa.
