Service Details

David Harrison, 81, of Altoona passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on July 10, 2013. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013, 10:30 a.m., at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street in Des Moines, where he was a member for nearly 40 years.

Dave was born in Des Moines, Iowa, to David and Vera Harrison. He met the love of his life, Pauline, and spent the next 62 years devoted to his wife, family, and friends.

Dave served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer during the Korean War and was awarded two bronze stars, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. Dave was a talented musician and received a letter of recognition from his commanding officer for entertaining soldiers during war time. Quoting from Cpt. Herman Marks, dated December 12, 1950; “…Private David T. Harrison is one of the finest pianists to appear in the service…” At age 13, Dave was granted the honor to perform for President Harry S. Truman. Dave’s love for music and entertainment continued throughout his entire life. He played piano in a band called the “The 4 D’s” playing events and dances. One of Dave’s most memorable performances was in May 2013 at Lutheran Hospital, playing for family and hospital staff.

Dave retired from American Income Life Insurance Company as a Public Relations Representative. Never one to just sit around, Dave started driving for Midwest Transit, taking him throughout the United States. There wasn’t a highway or interstate he didn’t know like the “back of his hand”. At age 79, Dave still kept busy working for Prairie Meadows during horse racing season.

Dave was a family man who loved spending time with Pauline, his four sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Their home has always been and will continue to be the hub for cookouts, dinners, holidays, and just hanging out.

Dave was preceded in death by parents, David and Vera Harrison; sister, Darlene Essick; and grandson, Zachary Harrison. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pauline; children, Tom (Lynne), Ron (Evelyn), Tim (Michelle), and Dave (Tami); eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Dave was truly blessed with the people who came into his life in these final days. The family wishes to give special thanks to his Hospice care givers and Pastor Jurchen who visited daily, delivering Dave a spiritual peace that was evident to the family during these cherished visits. Ron will always have a glass of ice tea waiting for you, Pastor.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hope Lutheran Church or Unity Point Hospice.
