Service Details

Mary Ann Ostrem, 76, passed away at the Taylor House Hospice Center in Des Moines on Monday, July 8, 2013, after succumbing to a short bout with breast cancer.

Mary Ann was born in Atlantic, Iowa; the only child of Kathryn Pessuth Baker and Glenn Baker. She grew up in Des Moines where she attended North High School. She graduated in 1955.

Mary Ann met Dave Ostrem while working at a local law firm. They wed on November 4, 1961, and they shared 51 wonderful years together. Mary Ann was the owner of Mary Ann's Gifts and Antiques in historical Valley Junction, West Des Moines, for 20 years. During that time, she raised 4 beautiful children, Lynn (Minneapolis), Dave Jr. (West Des Moines), Adam (Dallas) and Matthew (St. Louis).

Mary Ann is preceded in death by her parents and her young daughter, Beth Ingeborg, who passed away in 1963. She leaves behind her husband, Dave, 4 children, and 6 grandchildren.

Mary Ann once said that being a wife and mother was her greatest accomplishment. But her true passion was traveling, which she and Dave did extensively.

A memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013. Mary Ann will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Glendale Cemetery preceding the service.

In lieu of flowers, Mary Ann requested that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children - Twin Cities Unit, 2025 E. River Pkwy, Minneapolis, MN 55414, or online at: www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/Hospitals/Locations/TwinCities.aspx. This unit services the greater Des Moines area.

The family would like to acknowledge the efforts and care provided by the doctors, nurses, hospice caregivers and especially the staff at the John Stoddard Cancer Center. We appreciate all you do.
