Alvin Hartvig Andersen, 98, passed away Monday, July 8, 2013, at Scottish Rite Park.

He was born in Des Moines on July 27, 1914, and was a lifelong resident of Des Moines, except for four years as a child in Denmark. Alvin was co-owner of University Avenue Coal Company until he retired in the early 70s. He was a World War II Army Veteran and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day with the 149th Engineers. He helped to organize Army Reunions with other WWII Veterans of Engineers every year for 50-plus years. Alvin was a member of the East High Alumni Association, the Johnston Men's Garden Club, and was a Master Gardener. He was a member of the Des Moines Shrine Consistory and Masonic Temple, Past President of the Scottish Rite Resident's Association, and a lifetime member of Luther Memorial Church.

Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, Hans Jensen Andersen and Thyra Lykke Andersen, brothers Svend, Helmer and Harold Andersen.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 75 years, Arlene Moore Andersen; his son, Alan Lance Andersen of Roland, IA; daughter, Wendy Allison and husband Jim of Roswell, GA; grandchildren, Joel Patrick Allison of Atlanta, GA, Jacqueline Allison Torrence of Woodstock, GA; and two great-grandchildren, Austin David and Hunter Andersen Torrence of Woodstock, GA.

A memorial service will be held at Scottish Rite Park in the Penthouse on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at 1:30 pm.

Cremation arrangements are being handled by Hamilton's Funeral Home.
