Mary Janette Miller passed away peacefully on July 7, 2013, while surrounded by family. Mary was 89 years old, born on September 10, 1923, to Harry and Iva Hill in Churchville, Iowa. She moved to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951. Mary, called Janette by family and friends, raised 11 children on Des Moines’ Southside.
Mary Janette was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her greatest gift, as she lovingly referred to it, was her family. She was humbled that God would entrust her with his most precious possessions. She was unpretentious and understood hard work. She was best known for being a homemaker and running the payroll department for Younker’s department store for 25+ years. Mom liked to say, “don’t be afraid of a little hard work.”
She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Iva Hill, five brothers, and a sister. Also, taken from her too soon, her beloved daughter, Madonna; grandson, Timothy; and great grandson Robby.
Mary is survived by three siblings, Honora Tovrea, Bob (Lola) Hill, and Phyllis (Donald) Desenberg of Norwalk, Iowa. She was a molder of character and will be missed daily by the ten characters she molded; Francis (Eileen), Robert “Mick” (Diane), daughter-in-law Cindy Miller, Nancy Miller-Neal of Mesa, AZ, Jean (Rocky) Mitchell of Phoenix, AZ, Jody (Bill) Beimer, Danny, and Tina of Scottsdale, AZ, Ann (Dan) Vaughan, Michelle Cutler of Tyler, TX, and Mark (Stephanie) of Winterset, IA; 32 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, with the Rosary recited at 7:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July, 11, 2013. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Churchville, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers the family would ask that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Aunt Janette was truly one of the most special people on this planet. Life was fun, more full, in her presence. I can still hear her laugh. She was most generous with a smile and a kind word. She gave us all so much.

Sweet Aunt Janette, we will all miss her so. I have not met a more elegant, kind individual. I am sorry that I won't be able to come and celebrate her life with all of you wild Millers. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Janette's family. She was a special aunt to me and sister-in-law to my mother. Her playful sparring with my father (Lowell Hill) made every visit a joy for him. Her laugh lifted my mother's spirits in the most difficult of times. I will miss her smile, our conversations about politics and a never ceasing positive attitude.

Aunt Janette was one of the sweetest, most kind-hearted women I've known. To be around her, was to be happy. She was such a bright spot in my early life. Many thoughts and prayers go out to all of her family.
