Service Details

Patrick “Rick” Michael Mulstay passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013, just three weeks shy of his 70th birthday. A great husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, Rick found peace after a courageous three and a half year battle with lung cancer.

A native of Des Moines and 1961 graduate of Dowling High School, Rick held a 40-year career at Meredith Publishing Company. He was an avid sports enthusiast with a special affinity for golf. He found solace in the quiet of his garden and the new blooms that came with each passing season.

Rick was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters, son of the late Jacqueline Raney and James B. Mulstay and is remembered by his loving wife Marcy of 48 years; his sons, Patrick (Carissa) Mulstay and Ryan Mulstay, both of Denver; brothers, Jim (Jan) Mulstay of Denver, Paul (Rene) Mulstay, and Joe (Ramona) Mulstay; sisters, Starlyn (Patrick Hiatt) Parker, Sherry (Jim) Paul, Shelley (Mark) Samuelson, and Jeanne (Joe) Barrett; grandchildren, Haley, Charlotte, Lilly, and Tripp; and his chocolate lab, Mocha.

Rick was loving, strong, and witty right to the very end. He had a painless and peaceful passing surrounded by his family at home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 5, 2013, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, at the church.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Loren Brown and the Oncology staff at Mercy, the Mercy Home Care, and Mercy Hospice personnel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The First Tee of Greater Des Moines, c/o Jim Ballard, 12928 NW 85th Avenue, Grimes, Iowa.

Wishing you were still with us, but knowing you are somewhere better – you will always be in our hearts.

We love you “Big”.
