Service Details

Richard “Rick” Butler, Sr., 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Saturday, June 29, 2013, at his home.

Rick was born August 28, 1943 in Alton, Illinois. He proudly served his country in the Marine Corps. Rick retired from the City of Des Moines after 35 years of faithful service. He was a fisherman and a hunter. Rick loved nature and the outdoors. He always felt that the forest was his “church” ...it’s where he felt closest to God. Rick was a “plain jane” kind of guy...he was always most comfortable in his Levis, pocket t-shirts and flannels, and would never wear the Ralph Lauren polo shirts his family bought for him. He also collected wheat pennies. Above all else, he treasured spending time with his family, especially at Christmas time, which was his favorite holiday. Rick will be remembered as a straight forward, honest guy. He would always tell you the truth and never sugar coat anything or beat around the bush. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

Rick is survived by his loving wife with whom he shared his life, Joyce Butler; son, Richard Butler, Jr.; siblings, Charles “Sonny” (Pansy) Butler, Shirley Sanner, and Jack Butler; other loving relatives; and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles H. Butler; mother, Nellie Butler Caudle; and his step-father, Darrel Caudle.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Iowa.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Rick.
