Service Details

LeRoy John Rotert, 76, died June 25, 2013. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Visitation will follow the service.

LeRoy was born on May 30, 1937 in Willy, Iowa to Henry and Argina Rotert. He was the youngest of nine children. LeRoy joined the U.S. Army in 1957 and served until 1963. He lived in Carroll, Calhoun and Greene counties before moving to Des Moines in 1959. After living on the southside of Des Moines for 50 plus years, he moved to Altoona in 2008. LeRoy worked for several trucking companies over the years. After retiring from Farmland Industries he worked part-time for TMC as a driver-instructor where he earned his nickname “Hatchet Man”.

LeRoy attended St. Peter and Paul Church in Altoona and was a member of Iowa Pride Motorcycle Club, Cyclone Corvettes, Inc., and the American Legion. He enjoyed the ISU Men’s basketball games, driving his corvette, attending his children and grandchildren’s activities, traveling, and the many friends he has made over the years. LeRoy married his wife, Joan on May 28, 1955 and remarried her again on August 4, 1978, “after taking 9 years off for good behavior” per LeRoy.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Larry (Peggy) of Kansas City, MO, Kelly (Pam) of Stillwell, KS, Jeff (Rhonda) of Altoona; six grandsons; three great-granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and five brothers and sisters-in-law. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Randall; infant twin daughters, Robin and Regina; a brother; and two sisters.
