Dwight Wayne Monroe, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 14, 2013, at Taylor House Hospice after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Dwight was born August 6, 1932, to Elzy and Leona Monroe in Marion County, Iowa. He attended Liberty School, a one-room country school for beginners through 8th grade. At the end of the 8th grade, he moved to Attica Consolidated School area, where he graduated high school in 1952. The fall of that year, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged in the fall of 1956.

Dwight worked on the farm until moving to Council Bluffs in 1958. There he met Phyllis Irene Rachau, daughter of Frank and Faye Rachau, and they were married on May 29, 1958. To this union, they were blessed with four children.

Dwight re-enlisted in the US Air Force, and moved to Dyess Air Force Base and began raising their family. After being discharged, he attended Baptist Bible College to pursue his passion for the Lord. He helped begin many churches in his life and was active in the music, youth, and bus ministry at those churches. He ended his service at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Des Moines.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis; children, Dennis Monroe, Becky (Doug) Taylor, Tim Monroe, and Shirley (John) Howard; grandchildren, Caleb, Benjamin, Stephen, Heather, Sherri, Travis, Karissa, and John; great-grandchildren, Brendan, Tristan, Victoria, and Noah; brother, Hoyt Monroe; sister, Glenna Cobb; and a host of other family and church friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Wanda, Marilyn, Lorraine, Wilma, and Lucille.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Altoona Regular Baptist, 803 3rd Avenue SW, Altoona. A graveside service will occur at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Zion Cemetery in Pershing. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, at the church.
