Service Details

Lorraine O’Brien, 89, passed away suddenly on Friday, June 14, 2013, with her loving family by her side, after a brief illness. Services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with visitation on Monday, June 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. and the funeral service on Tuesday, June 18 at 12:00 noon. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Lorraine was born on September 4, 1923 in Des Moines, IA to Edith (Lamb) and Mirl Shannon. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941and attended a beauty college in Omaha, NE. She married Gerald 'Pink' Cooper in 1942. They had one son, Jerry Edward. After they divorced, she met James 'Jim' O'Brien. She married Jim in 1947. They had three children: Pamela Jean, James Patrick 'Pat' III and Michael Robert.

Lorraine worked at Weeks and Leo in Urbandale for 20 years. After retiring from Weeks and Leo, she worked at Northwestern Bell, US West, and Qwest Communications, when she finally retired for good in 1991. She was an active volunteer for the Za Ga Zig Ladies Auxiliary and was a member of Pioneers of America.

Her hobbies included ceramics, watching her grandchildren play sports, sewing, baking and walking at the mall with her friends. She was famous for her chicken salad sandwiches, dill dip, chocolate peanut butter fudge, trail mix, and her homemade (secret recipe) chocolate pie.

She will be greatly missed by her children; Jerry (Carol) Cooper, Pat (Connie) O’Brien, and Mike O’Brien; grandchildren Jerry (Jessica) Cooper, Jason (Angela) Cooper, Jack (Pam) Cooper, Jeremy (Shannon) Cooper, Sheila (Todd) Griffith, Shannon (Jeff) Mullins, Anna (David) Schneider and Neil (Sara) O'Brien; and great-grandchildren Nick, Amy and Carly Cooper, Max Schneider, Jacob and Gabi Cooper, Hailey and Carson Cooper, McKenna Cooper, Jordan Griffith, Steven Mullins, and Mackenzie and Sarai Schneider. Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Jim O’Brien; infant daughter, Pamela Jean; sister, Maxine Boatright; and brother, Jack Shannon.
