Saman Phoung

Saman, 87, passed away May 21, 2013, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was born April 5, 1926, to Phoung (Mao) Chal.

Saman was born in Pailin, Cambodia, and later moved to the United States in 1979, where she raised her family in Des Moines. She was hardworking and enjoyed taking care of many household duties such as cleaning, cooking, and yard work.

Saman is survived by daughter, Yann (Phann Sos) Chal; son, Samoeun Chal; grandchildren, Suphap (Mary) Phann, Phoeun Phann, Sophay Phann, Sally Chal, Skylee Chal, Samiy Chal, Serena Reyes, Savonny Chal, and Kelly Phann; great-grandchildren, Tia, Lea, Khloey, Ashton, Ryu, Mileena, Saiga, Xiylana, Aya, Saphira, Miranda, and Armani; and brother, Sarin (Tream Chuon) Phoung.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chal Chang; son, Yoeun Chal; and brother, Chak Phoung.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, May 27, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University Avenue. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.
