Ira Frederick Hicks, 79, passed away on May 19, 2013. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 10 a.m., KYLES A.M.E. Zion Church, 907 15th Street in Des Moines, IA. Visitation will be the night before at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Ira was born in Omaha, NE, to Elizabeth (Goldstein) and Hearthwood Hicks. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a maintenance engineer until his retirement in 2004. Ira was the life of the party; fun, flamboyant, and full of life. He umpired for 25 years, played golf, and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. Ira was also a member of the Hawkeye Elks Lodge #160.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, Carmel; his children, Elizabeth Stewart, Tina (Phillip) Dashiell, and Dobby Hicks; brothers, Robert and Alonzo Hicks; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ira was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ira Jr; two brothers; and one sister.

Please accept my deepest sympathies in the loss of Ira Sr. It has been an extremely difficult time for the Hicks family and I pray for healing and strength for you all. His memory will forever be in the heart of your family along with his son's. As they journey through Heaven together know that when the heart grieves over what is lost, the spirit rejoices in what is left. I wish you all peace to comfort you, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to hold forever in your hearts.

I am so sorry to hear of Ira's passing. Your family has endured a great amount of sorrow recently, but take comfort knowing that they are both together looking over all of you. It was so nice to see everyone when we came to visit Ira II when he was in the hospital. (I missed you Dobby!!) Please take care, and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I had the joy of umpiring with Ira for some 15 yrs., and the pleasure of working with him at the Main Post Office in Des Moines. Ira was such an easy going, lighthearted fellow. I pray that God will be your source of strength and comfort as the family works through the grieving process. Psalm 116: 15, "Precious in the sight of the Lord are the death of His godly ones."

I witnessed Ira umpire many ball games, he was funny to watch when he would get upset.
Also worked with him at the post office.....well, one of us worked.
He was a nice guy.

My condolences to the Hicks family. Ira was such a character. Ira, Ron Carter and Ron Anderson are probably the best black men I ever had in my life. He would always say get you Red Ass over here to me
