James Douglas Redfern, 80, passed away on May 18, 2013 at his home in Omaha, NE. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA with visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Jim was born on July 21, 1932 in Linden, IA, to Margaret and Lyle Redfern. He was one of 6 children including John, Mary Lou, Fred, David, and Tom. Jim graduated from Guthrie Center High School and served as sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War. Jim married Diane June Ogden on October 4, 1957. They had 3 children: Vicki, Valorie, and John.

During his life Jim had several careers including an automobile dealership, police officer, restaurant owner, horse trainer, and property manager. He loved spending time with his family. Hobbies included fishing, golfing, horse racing, and RV’ing with his wife. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Hunter, and great-granddaughter, Lauren. Jim also enjoyed spending time with his many friends especially Hasan and “Mom”. After living most of his life in central Iowa, Jim moved to Omaha, NE into the Ralston House Senior Apartments. There he enjoyed many new friendships and being close to his family.

He will be greatly missed by his children, Vicki (Joe) Smejkal, Valorie (David) McCool, John (Deanna) Redfern; grandchildren, Sarah (Ryan) Scholz, Michael McCool, Hunter Redfern; and great-grandchild, Lauren Scholz. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Diane; his brother, Fred; and his parents.
