Service Details

Norma Pearl (Carter) McDaniel, 92, departed her earthly home on Friday, May 17, 2013 to be reunited with beloved family and friends who had gone before. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home.

Norma was born on July 25, 1920 in Marion County, the daughter of John and Mabel (Ball) Carter. She was the youngest of five children and grew up on the family farm near Percy, Iowa. After her graduation from Monroe High School and a Normal Training Course, she acquired her teaching certificate and taught at Pleasant Hill and Valley Schools in Marion County. During this time she met Samuel Scott McDaniel, whom she later married on February 25, 1939, as a celebration of their love for one another. To this union they were blessed with three children, Carmen Charlene, John Scott, and Robert Noel.

She experienced the fullness and joy of life’s riches, the greatest of these, her family and friends. Norma was an accomplished pianist and entertained alongside her husband Sam, who played the guitar. She worked in the public sector for many years, retiring from the dental office of Dr. David McCoy. Norma was active in Eastern Star, past member of Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of the United Methodist Church, singing in the choir and volunteering her time. She and Sam enjoyed 19 winters in Texas. In her later years she enjoyed getting together with the Red Hat Ladies. Her faith sustained her in all things, giving her strength, courage, and hope.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mabel Carter; sister, Opal Quick; brothers, Orval, Doyle, and Herbert; son-in-law, Hal Jonas; her sons, Robert and John Scott McDaniel; and her devoted and loving husband of 61 years, Sam McDaniel.

Those left to honor and cherish her memory are her daughter, Carmen Jonas of Tacoma, Washington; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She now knows the larger vision and greater purpose as she touches the soft, green pastures of God’s eternal ground.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ft. Des Moines United Methodist Church in loving memory of Norma.
