Service Details

Amy Louise Sunderland-Kleene, 33, passed away on May 14, 2013. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Ave in Des Moines.

Amy was born on April 1, 1980 in Portland, OR to Bonnie (Calhoun) and Richard Sunderland. She graduated from Arts and Communication High School in Beaverton, Oregon, and received a degree in English Literature and Writing from Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Amy met her husband Ben at her home church on Mother’s Day 2002, and the couple married August 15, 2003. They moved to Des Moines in late 2010. Amy was a devoted mother, homemaker and teacher; choosing to homeschool her children. She loved a challenge and was a talented musician, artist, photographer and crafter. She also enjoyed nature and being outdoors, and started the Prairie Grass Guild, a nature study co-op for homeschool children.

Left to cherish Amy’s memory are her parents, Bonnie and Richard Sunderland of Beaverton, Oregon; her husband, Benjamin Kleene; children, Peter and Jonathan; grandmother, Agnes Calhoun; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and one nephew. Amy was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl and Minnie Sunderland and Robert L. Calhoun; and her uncle, Robert S. Calhoun.
