Doris May Gaer, 93, passed from this life peacefully to be with the Lord on May 13, 2013 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa with her family gathered to comfort her. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday, May 17, 2013 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 18 at First Church of Christ, 310 NW Ash Drive, Ankeny. An interment service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Doris was born on January 19, 1920 near Elsmore, Kansas to Audley and Doshie Laver. Her family moved to near Kirkman, Iowa in 1923. She was a graduate of Irwin High School, Irwin, Iowa. Doris was united in marriage to Everett Gaer of Redline, Iowa on January 22, 1938. Everett served in the Army during World War II and in 1945 they moved to the community of Carlisle, Iowa where they resided on their family farm for 55 years. To this union three sons were born, Terry, Stanley and Jerry.

After Everett’s death on May 3, 1998 Doris moved to Ankeny, Iowa in 2000 where she has been a member of the First Church of Christ and an active volunteer at the Neveln Community Center.

Doris is survived by her children, Terry (Vicky) Gaer of Aurora, Colorado, Stan (Jeanie) Gaer of Ankeny, Iowa; her sister, Alice Chamberlain of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, William (Kelly) Gaer of Aurora, Colorado, Russell (Amber) Gaer of Peyton, Colorado, Blue Ballard of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and four great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Everett; youngest son, Jerry Gaer; brother, Alfred Laver; and grandson, Blake Gaer.

Doris’ family is most appreciative of the wonderful care that she received by the dedicated staff at Mercy Hospice.
