Service Details

Jean Louise (Jones) McManus, 96, passed away May 4, 2013, at the Mitchell Village Care Center, surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born to Esther and Brooke Jones in Superior, Wisconsin, the second eldest of four children raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She attended and graduated from the Minneapolis public schools. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, with her Bachelor of Science degree in child development, she married William H. McManus in 1940.

They spent many years traveling and seeing the country. They raised four sons over the course of their 47-year marriage. She worked as an Elementary School Teacher in the Des Moines Public School System for 22 years prior to retiring in 1978. She cherished her family and especially the time she spent devoted to helping raise and watch over her grandchildren.

Jean was an active member of her community including coordinating activities at the Mitchellville United Methodist Church and volunteering as a tutor and mentor at the elementary school. Jean was not all work; she loved to play. She thoroughly loved being in the outdoors. There is nothing she loved to do more than bird watching, fishing, camping, and hiking.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Robert (Mary) of Kansas City, Missouri, Michael (Jocelyn) of Altoona, and John (Michelle) of Bondurant; daughter-in-law, Sandy Fischer; grandchildren, Amy (Corey Carroll), Krista, Sara (Josh Dooley), Shawn, Kate (Chris Thomas), Bill, and Justin; and her great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Michael, and Autumn. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother, John; sister, Eleanor; brother, Chuck; husband, William “Bill” McManus; and her son, William Patrick McManus.

Memorial services will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the Mitchellville United Methodist Church, 210 2nd Street. Burial will follow at the Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Hamilton’s Mitchellville Funeral Home, 303 Center Avenue S, from 6 to 8 pm Tuesday.
