I have fond memories of Jimmy. He served as chairman of External Relations during the time I led the unit. I found him to be dependable and trust worthy, He was my friend and confidant. Jon, I will keep you and the rest of your family in my prayers.

I met Mr. Payne in 1992 when I first joined Red Cross. In time I consulted him often and considered him a mentor. Over the years, he taught me much. Most of all he taught me what it meant to be kind in words and gentle in spirit. And, he knew that those were the things I needed to learn most.
I will miss him; his fatherly wisdom; and his steadfast devotion to service.
To his family, God Bless you and thanks for sharing Jimmy.

To the members of my "other" family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Our families have been close longer than I can remember. Our parents are all together now and watching over us. Love, Ginger

I have known Papa for as long as I can remember. I remember I had interviewed him one time for a school project, by far that is my favorite memory of him. He was so excited to be interviewed, and I had also loved every minute of it. I can't really remember what I interviewed him about, and maybe that isn't important. What is important is that to this day I can remember how we both felt just being able to talk, and to me that is the best memory you can have of someone. I know I will miss him dearly, and I am so thankful that I got to have him in my life and that I had the chance to know such a great man.

Jimmy always treated me and my family like we were his family. He would actually talk about his war years to me and gave me some very interesting and humorous stories from Italy. When the Irag war started I found his original enlistment information and was going to fake a letter recalling him to active duty. Jon talked me out of it saying Papa would have taken it seriously and started calling people to see whats up. So instead I told Jimmy about it and he thought it was hilarious! Jimmy thank you for your Service to our country, you will be missed!!

I have known Papa my whole life. He always took the time to listen to me even as a little kid, he was like a grandfather to me. Papa would always be so happy and interested in what my siblings and I had to say. He was a great man to be around.

I met Jimmy back in 1983 when I worked at Hy-Vee with Jon. He made me smile every time he came in the store! After a while, he told me to call him Papa and always gave me a hug and told me he loved me. Papa was great with my kids and my youngest was crazy about him. He followed him around and talked non-stop and Papa was so patient with him. He was one of a kind.

I met Jim over 30 years ago when Jon and I were just starting high school. Over the years I experienced his kindness, generosity, and the way he lit up when he spoke about his family. He gave Jon, and me by default since we were always together, the latitude to grow and earn responsibility in our younger years and as a parent, I will pass this along to my daughter. Jon, give Mel some grief and make her smile for me. Love you both, George.
