Pete Mazzie

April 24, 2013

Service Details

We truly lost a “one of a kind” on April 25, 2013, when Pete Mazzie passed away in Las Vegas, NV. Pete was doing what he loved, working his business and teasing the guys when he said, “Well boys, I gotta go,” and put that ever-infamous cigar in his mouth as he quietly passed from this earth to join the love of his life, wife, Dorothy Mazzie.

Pete will be missed by his children, Diane Mazzie, Carl Dominic Mazzie, and Suzie (Greg) Fontanini, who were the light of his life. Pete would be sure he let everyone know how great they were and wanted to share all of their accomplishments, as he was an ever proud parent and he wanted everyone to know it. His beloved dog, Buddy, will join Pete and Dorothy at their graveside.

Pete was born May 3, 1935, in Des Moines, to Carl and Marie (Sovich) Mazzie. He was always the big brother to Butch Mazzie, as they were not only brothers but confidants and truly best friends.

Pete’s grandchildren, Charlee Slaughter, Joseph Cerretti, Gina Fontanini, Anna Fontanini, Anthony Mazzie, Christopher Brewer, and two great grandchildren will forever miss their “Papa.”

Pete was the definition of a true friend. He incurred friendship that went back 75 years with Baby John, Pat Guggino, Mike Labonia, and Frank Scaglione. Baby John was his business partner, buddy, and soul brother for life. Pete had countless friends that were very important to him whom he caught up with daily. He was always willing to do anything to help someone in need, and he would give you the shirt off his back.

Pete had many nicknames such as Speedy Petey, there was never a car that Pete met that he could not wreck. He was also known as “Howey” which came from the first time that he let a cigar touch his lips as he was teased that he would be the next Howard Hughes.

Pete was always an entrepreneur, working his father’s business, the South Shore Athletic Club, and in 1969 opening The Inferno Restaurant and Lounge. In 1984, Pete joined his son, Carl, in California. The two of them worked hand in hand in the car industry. Later, Pete moved to Las Vegas and started Southern Contracting, which he was actively running until the day the good Lord called him home.

There was never a place that Pete would go where he was not recognized. He could light up a room, just by his presence. Pete was loved by everyone and he loved all. Pete, we love you and you will be forever missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

A funeral mass will be 10 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2013, at St. Anthony’s, with burial following at Glendale Cemetery. A visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a vigil at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 2, at Hamilton Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.
