Arnold Byars

Arnold R. Byars, 85, of Des Moines died on Monday, July 9, 2007 at the Des Moines V. A. Hospital. Graveside funeral services will be at 9 A.M. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6-8 P.M. Friday evening at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home.
Arnold was an Army Veteran of WW II and was awarded the purple heart and the bronze star. He also boxed while in the service. He was a switchman for the Rock Island railroad retiring in 1971. He was a member of the V.F.W., the Masonic Home Lodge and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children Theresa (Elbert) Haynes of Des Moines, Bonnie (Rick) Stahlnecker of Phoenix, Rebecca (Merle) Ragan of Des Moines, Michael (Connie) Byars of Norwalk and Kirk (Kathy) Byars of Des Moines, his brother Bill Byars of Phoenix, his sisters Juanita Bassiere of Hoople, North Dakota and Jo Anne Peterson of Grafton, North Dakota as well as 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Irene, his infant son Terry Lee, his brother Ralph and his sister Jeanne. Memorial contributions may be made to the Des Moines V.A. Hospital or Hospice of Central Iowa.
